Some Small Thoughts on Annapolis

By everyone’s estimation the Annapolis Summit is going to be just another photo op, this time staged by the Bush administration. After witnessing so many of these events over the past 27 years, it rankles me knowing that at each and every one Israel alone has been expected to make “painful concessions”. What exactly are the other Summit participants doing to make peace in our region a reality?

It takes courage, vision and drive to make the changes required to create an environment where peace can exist in this region. If these qualities do exist in the present regional leadership, they aren’t being used towards that end. Maybe it will take another 40 years of wandering in the desert before it happens, but that seems to me to be optimistic.

  1. I’m not quite sure which side of the fence you are sitting on, but Israel and the Palestinians have to come to the table without the threat of the gun – when the guns are laid down on both side, with a binding agreement NOT to take them back up again, will things begin to change.

When that happens they will have a fighting chance to start to talk about peace.
